Creativity and its Benefits
A lot of people tend to view careers in the creative industry as non-essential, unneeded and oversaturated with unemployable artists. Our world seems to value those who pursue the more traditional career paths, such as business or medicine, as more ambitious, successful, and intelligent.
I’m sure you’ve heard people from both sides making fun of the other; designers complaining that accountants are too boring, or lawyers laughing about the lack of drive in musicians. Why do we have to be pitted against each other? Why is one career considered more important, or more prestigious, than the other?
I believe that the best outcomes are created when people from a variety of industries work together. Creativity benefits both the work and profit of corporations, and corporations can give creatives a chance to really utilise their skillset in a professional environment - and it shows. Let’s start by looking at the definition of ‘creativity’. When you punch the word into the Google search bar, it is described as:
“The use of imagination or original ideas to create something; inventiveness.”
This definition makes sense, and is correct - however, when we think of creativity, we don’t always associate it with the ideas of innovation, development and originality. We tend to think more of creativity in the sense of art, music and literature, industries which many people don’t think have a place in the corporate world.
Although these fields certainly are associated with creativity, and many of those in these industries do primarily produce art, we are forgetting the other benefits of posessing creativity when we reduce it to this idea alone. We need to reinvent how we think of creativity, to see the value of it, and how it can benefit the business world.
We need to hire more creatives. Or, rather, include creativity as a desired skill in job postings and opportunities. Here’s why.
Creativity can help your business to come up with unique, original ideas that could help overcome problems. Every corporation has faced an issue that can’t be fixed without hours of pondering, consulting, and brainstorming - but with a creative mind on the team, and their innovative way of thinking, this problem could be solved a lot quicker. Furthermore, creatives can help introduce new perspectives and ideas to the business, especially in the marketing and public relations sector, as they can visualise new ways to connect to your audience in an innovative and effective manner.
Creatives can do more than just design your business card, write your slogan or compose a jingle for your television ad. They can help increase workplace productivity, aid problem-solving and introduce new ways of thinking that can expand your perspectives, and your profits.
That’s why creatives can truly benefit corporations.
